Where to Go in Greece in Late September and October

Greece in October can be a surprisingly good time to visit, especially if you choose the right destination. The peak summer crowds begin to disappear, temperatures become more comfortable, and in southern parts of the country the sea can still be warm enough for swimming.

But choosing the right destination matters more at this time of year. Northern Greece and some smaller islands can become cooler and quieter quite quickly, while southern islands often hold on to summer conditions for longer.

If your priority is a combination of warm weather, beaches, sightseeing and enough restaurants and services still operating, these are some of the places we would consider.

What Is the Weather Like in Greece in Late September and October?

According to Greece’s national meteorological service, the country’s Mediterranean climate generally features mild, rainy winters and hot, relatively dry summers. Days are generally warm, the sea has had the entire summer to heat up, and evenings are usually pleasant.

October is less predictable. You can still have beautiful sunny days, particularly in southern Greece, but rain and cooler periods become more likely as the month progresses.

There is also a noticeable difference between northern and southern Greece. Halkidiki, Thessaloniki and other northern destinations usually cool down earlier, while islands such as Crete, Rhodes, Kos and Karpathos tend to remain warmer for longer.

This is why destination choice becomes increasingly important if you are travelling mainly for beaches and swimming.

Crete – One of the Safest Choices for Late Season

Crete is one of our first choices for a late-season trip to Greece.

Its southern location gives it one of the longest warm seasons in the country, and the island is large enough that it does not depend entirely on summer tourism. Cities such as Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion remain active outside the peak holiday months.

Another advantage is variety. You can combine beaches with mountain villages, historic sites, local food and road trips, which is useful if you get a cloudy or cooler day.

For an October trip, Crete is particularly attractive if you want more than just sitting on the beach.

Rhodes – Beaches and History

Rhodes is another strong option for late September and October.

The island combines beaches with a large historic town, archaeological sites and plenty of places to explore by car. Rhodes Town also makes the island feel less dependent on the summer beach season than some smaller Greek islands.

During warm periods, beach days can still be possible, while cooler days can be used for exploring the Old Town, Lindos and villages around the island.

That balance makes Rhodes particularly practical when the weather is no longer as predictable as it is in July or August.

Kos – Easy and Relaxed

Kos is a good choice if you want a relatively easy and relaxed island holiday.

The island is compact, distances are manageable, and there is a good combination of beaches, historical sites and Kos Town.

Late September is particularly attractive because temperatures are generally more comfortable for cycling, walking and sightseeing than during the hottest summer weeks.

As October progresses, however, some seasonal businesses may begin reducing their hours or closing, so it is worth checking accommodation and local services before booking.

Karpathos – For Something Quieter

Karpathos is a very different choice.

It is less developed than Rhodes or Crete and can appeal to travellers looking for dramatic landscapes, traditional villages and a quieter atmosphere.

Late September can be an excellent time to explore the island without the busiest summer crowds. By October, however, Karpathos becomes noticeably quieter and there may be fewer tourism services operating.

For travellers who prefer nature and peaceful places, that can actually be part of the attraction.

For a later October trip, however, Crete or Rhodes may be more practical because they have larger towns and more year-round activity.

What Changes After the Summer Season?

One thing to remember is that Greece does not simply switch from summer to winter on a particular date.

The change happens gradually, and it varies considerably by destination.

In major cities and larger islands, everyday life continues normally. In smaller resorts and highly seasonal beach destinations, however, some beach bars, hotels, restaurants and tourist services begin closing as visitor numbers fall.

Ferry and flight schedules can also be different from the peak summer timetable.

This does not mean you should avoid Greece in October. It simply means that a little more planning is useful than during July or August.

The advantage is that popular places can feel much calmer, roads are less busy and sightseeing is often far more comfortable without the intense summer heat.

Can You Still Swim in Greece in October?

Yes, swimming in Greece in October is certainly possible, especially in southern destinations.

The sea does not cool immediately when summer ends, so water temperatures can remain pleasant after the hottest months have passed.

The bigger uncertainty is often the weather outside the water. Wind, clouds or a cooler day can make swimming less appealing even when the sea itself is still relatively warm.

For the best chance of combining an October holiday with swimming, we would generally look towards southern Greece rather than the north.

Is Late September Better Than October?

If beaches and swimming are your main priorities, late September is the safer choice.

You still get many of the advantages of travelling outside peak season — fewer crowds and more comfortable temperatures — while most seasonal businesses are still operating.

October can be more interesting for travellers who want to combine the coast with road trips, food, villages, history and sightseeing.

It is also worth remembering that there is a big difference between travelling on October 3 and October 28. The further you move into autumn, the more flexible you should be with your plans.

Our Pick for an October Trip

If we had to choose one destination for an October trip, Crete would probably be our first choice.

It offers a strong combination of southern location, beaches, cities, villages, food and things to do if the weather changes.

Rhodes would be another practical option, particularly for travellers who want to combine beaches with history and sightseeing.

Kos works well for an easy and relaxed holiday, while Karpathos is more appealing if your priority is nature and a quieter experience.

Late September and October are not the same as visiting Greece in high summer — and that is exactly why they can be so enjoyable. With the right destination and slightly more flexible expectations, you can experience a calmer side of Greece while still enjoying plenty of sunshine and time by the sea.
